Females have a lot of orange in their stomachs. Males will have some, but females have a lot. Males are bigger too.

is the smaller one the one with the smaller hump?

i remember there was a post on this a few weeks ago and someone said females can color up at a young age so you may possibly have to males.

what size are they?

do a google on them and you will be able to see the difference in sex quite easily

I would go to your Local LFS and look at there tanks of convicts and take a look at the bellys of the fish. At the age they are there you should see the diffrence.

Look at them for a bit, even take a pic if you can. Go home at look at your see if they are the same.

I'll try to get pics here hold on.http://www.aquariumfish.net/information/raising_baby_fish_2.htmThe second fish on this page is a female notice the orange scales on her stomach. They can also have darker and more of the color.

and male... is the 3rd picture, top fish. No orange scales.

I hope this helps.

Both male and female are agressive...have you seen a breeding pair of convicts?...let alone 2 pairs in a 10 gallon tank at an lfs...all hell breaks lose...there are 3 breeding pairs in a tank at one of the lfs's around here...they have 3 odd fish out pinned behind a filter, 1 pair is in a cave the others 1 in front of it and one behind it...it's a non stop brawl between the pairs...the females will fight and the males will intervene and start fighting...very agressive when breeding (both sexes).

With the rate convicts breed, the easiest way to tell is to find which one lays and sticks close to the eggs.
