Are they German (blue) rams? If so, the following will help you sex them.

Male German rams have a 'spike' at the front of their dorsal fin. This is an area where the ray on the fin are much longer than the other ones. The third ray is the longest one. Also, female German rams have more red/pink on their bellies than males. The spike is the best way to sex these rams, though.

I was reading your link and when i looked at my newly purchased rams i noticed that one of them has jet black spikes (the third one being the longest) and a very pretty orangish-red outlining his fins. The other ram is not as colorful but has a lighter shade of black dorsal fin with the third being a little longer. It also has a pinkish coloring to its belly, so i am not sure if it is a boy or a girl. They seem to get along and swim together so i think it is a boy and a girl, is it possible for a girl to have the 3rd spike be black and the longest?

To clarify the spike thing, here is a picture of my male German ram:

A little fuzzy, but you can see that the second and third rays of the dorsal fin are longer than the rest.

Colors on German rams don't seem to help much in sexing. The only instance in which they do help (that I can think of), is the pinker belly of the females. The two rams that you have are probably a male/female pair. The third ray on the male will be much longer than the third ray on the female.

By the way, male rams can have a little bit of pink on their bellies, too. They just have less than females do.

Thanks for your reply, they get along so well and are always swimming together so i am pretty sure they are a male and a female.
