Depending on how big your krib is, one of the best ways to tell if you have a male or female is by the dorsal (top) fin and tail fin. The back tip of the male dorsal fin will be longer and come to a sharper point than the female's. Also, once they reach a certain size, males will have a small point on the very back on the tail fin, where a female will have a very tiny, if any, point. This way can only be seen by experianced breeders unless the fish is AT LEAST a half inch to an inch.

Also, females usually have a purplish belly, where the males will not. HOWEVER, there has been selective breeding to get the males to have a redish-purple belly too.

There is also a way to sex them according to the circles on the back of the dorsal fin, however, I have found MANY cases of this just not being true, thus I do not use or suggest it.

If you can, post a picture and I (or someone else) can sex it for you.

Thank you Racso. I cannot add photos on here, because I am not a premium member, but you can see them at my yahoo photos log:

I also have my swordtail fry in that file, if you are interested. I appreciate you help.

pic one, is the only one I would say "could" be a male on the right side. Not 100% sure though, as can't get a real good look at it. All the other pics are females.

generally the males have the pointed dorsal fins, but this may not be a good idea, b/c of fin damage. the male face is pointier or bolder where as the female is curved. the females usually have a really red to purple spot on there tummies. males will get them two, but not that much. i would guess that males will be very aggressive to other kirbs being added to the tank, i know mines was. when they flare my males was turnning red.

Nice pics

I agree with Acid as far as the females. Take a look at the photo on the FP [link=krib profile page]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/kribensis.xml" style="COLOR: #FF66FF[/link]. That's a male and should give you an idea what a male's dorsal and tale fin look like.

I also have my swordtail fry in that file, if you are interested

If you mean sexing them, they're still too young in the pics to do so.

Thanks ya'all. I think that the first one is a male as well but what about this one:

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/manborg22/detail?.dir=1204&.dnm=825e.jpg&.src=ph

That one has been really aggressive and has the spots on the codial fins as well as some pointedness in the dorsal fin. The thing that throws me off is the purple belly.

Theresa, how old do the cichlids have to be to mate?

You all rock, thanks for your insights.

I agree with Acidrain, all female. Sorry, if you want them to breed, you're out of luck. Good luck on getting a male though.
