I'm thinking of setting up a small shell dweller tank - it's a 10 gallon, and i'm thinking either a pair of multis or brevis.

just a few questions on some technical things

1.) how would plants work out in a shellie tank? not heavily planted, obviously, but with some vals or anubias or java fern?

2.) substrate - i know sand is preferred. but how fine, exactly? something like thishttp://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=7324&N=2004+113555]http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=7324&N=2004+113555[/link] or this[link=http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=8976&N=2004+113555?

or would it have to be like thishttp://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=7321&N=2004+113554?

in other words, would it have to be real sugar sized grain sand, or just very fine gravel, like the tahitian moon sand?

They preffer sand, and personally I like the Aragamax sand. But, I have bred both of those fish in a tank with gravel substrate. As well, I have bred them in tanks with sand substrate. Aragonite is another good sand to use. Anything with a calcium base makes for a good substrate for Tanganyikans. It helps to buffer the ph up where they need it to be. Aragonite is available in most lfs. It is very white, and is easily rinsed when preparing it for your tank.

As for plants, they will be fine. I have plants in 90% of my tanks, including with those fish. They will not harm the plants either.

HTH.....

AcidRain sums it up there, any substrate which is fine enough for them to be able to grab a mouthful of will keep them happy. Any of those finer ones would be great. I have used silica sand and crushed coral sand with equal success.
Plants are only a concern when they get shifted or uprooted accidently by the fish in the course of their digging - anchored under rocks will keep them in the one spot. So Vals wouldn't last too long without being dislodged but anubias, java fern and also java moss wedged somewhere too is good.
