if you take my advice you will hav a totaly different tank from every other chump who go's out and buys a GT or JD thinking that they are sum of the only south americans which the fact being is there not really south americans more central american... the fact is that there are heaps and all grow to a decent size and have good personality. not meaning their peacful but show a conection to their owners. would you like to know more???

Don't overlook the often overlooked CA/SA Eartheaters (Geophagus sp. and Gymnogeophagus sp). The Demon Fish (Satanoperca Jurupari) is another great SA Eartheater.

for south americans there are some great looking Geophagus and Gymnogeophagus (balzanii are very nice ). For centrals your best bet would be a Thorichthys/Cryptoheros (but not convicts) combo or a pair of Herichthys sp. 'Rio Salto'. Any of these would make for a spectacular setup that is not the same old same old.

So here is the thing. Sometime this summer I am going to pull some of my fish out of my 55Gal. to put into my new 40 Gal. Left over my my 55 Gal. will be my pair of convics, common pleco, and a sydromis (Miss spelled) Cat fish. What I would like to do is add in other cichlids that get a little bigger and have some more color to them. Right now I am looking at Jack Dempsey's, Texas Cichlid, or a Green Terror. I would probably only one 1 or 2 of these in there. I am really open to sugestions though. Pictures are really great too!! = )

Would that be to risky to have in a 55 Gal? They don't get a hump on their head do they?? I kind of have a thing for that.

no, jacks don't get a hump...at least none that I've ever seen. A single jack dempsey or a pair would be ok in a 55 gallon but would be much better off in something around 15-18" wide. Personally, I wouldn't want to put anything over 8" in a 55 gallon.

Yeah that has been my thinking. There don't seem to be a lot of choses in the 6 to 7 inch range for New Worlds that can hang with my convics. Something that I have been looking at latly is a Green Dorf Pike Cichlid. They only get to be about 4 to 6 inches and seem to be pretty colorful.

Here is a link of where I found them.
