Okey-dokey. Now for the fun. My 50g is up and running, all plants in, and I have a BN, silver dollar sized angel, and an african butterfly(from another tank). I have a few questions with stocking:
Here was my original list: 2 angels
2 pearl gouramis
12 diamond tetras
1 BN
6 zebra loaches
Yet after some thought, and looking at just how BIG pearl gouramis get, I've decided that the Angels/gourami mix wouldn't work because of the limited space. I then decided that I wanted harlequin rasboras instead of the tetras. My tank is a 50g, 30" long, 18" tall, 18"wide (or around there)....
So, instead of the goramis, I'd figured I'd try out rams. Now, I've heard that these will do fine with angels, but I have a few questions. first of all, would I go with a male and female, or two males? (I don't care if they breed, but I'd rather not have any ram-fights) And, Will two be enough? The tank is heavily planted, with a large piece of driftwood and plenty of hiding spots. And do you guys think that I'd have space for a small school of 8 rasboras? or am I better off adding another angel to avoid agression?
Sorry all, I have a ton of questions, but I'm sure all of you know how hard stocking can be... Thanks a ton

So you're moving the butterflyfish?

A male/female ram pair would be better than two males, because they'll be more friendly towards each other and you may get to see courtship behavior. That's more fun to watch than ritualized squabbling, at least in my opinion. Two rams are fine; though they are somewhat social fish they don't absolutely need the company.

The problem with angelfish is that their behavior towards each other can be unpredictable. It is generally better to have more of them, in case the dominant angel picks on the other ones. The more angelfish you have, the less attention the boss angel will give to any subordinates.

Sirbooks: no, sorry. The butterfly is already in the tank. I wasn't clear on that.
jasonpisani: Could I have the loaches? I wouldn't mind getting rid of the tetras or rasboras if I could have the loaches (I'm in love...)
So I'll deffinetly do the male/female ram idea. But Should I get rid of the tetra/rasboras for another angel? The one I have now can be agressive (from what I've observed from the last tank it was in, although that could have been because there wasn't much room in a 10g)

The loaches are fine, I guess that Jason just prefers the other fish on his suggested list over them.

Would you be willing to try just one angelfish? That way you wouldn't have to worry about conspecific aggression, and there easily would be room for the rasboras you wanted. I'll be honest though- I'm not really a fan of angelfish. You could almost say that I'm biased against them because of their popularity with others.

Oh, my bad. Yeah, maybe I'll try one angel, it's just that I really like the one I have, and its not like I'm dying to have the rasboras. I like the idea of having a small school, yet now I'm not sure. I'll just stick with the one angel and the rams, and we'll see where it goes from there.
But I really like angels.....
