what is the footprint of the 80 gallon. you may be able to get by with a pair of midas or red devils however it would be imperative to have a tank divider on hand so the female can escape should the male get too aggressive.

If you want a personalable fish I would go with the RD. I like motas the best because of their awesome pattern and they are turning out bright gold. Jags are cool fish too, I like how they 'stock' things..You could go with a pair of motas or jags with a divider in that tank, if you keep up water changes, so it's up to your personal preference.

My 80 gallon is 4' by 2' and 16" tall. I'm deciding between Jag, Motaguensis or RD...

Why not get Motaguensis. I have two little guys growing out in a 75G. I have them divided since the bigger one was showing no mercy to the smaller one. Mine are still shy, but I have read that they will come out all the time once they get some size on them.

These fish are beautiful and get pretty big but you could probably have one in an 80 gallon tank. Let me know what you think about this firehead.

80 gallon tank is way too small to keep these 3 fish. only exception would be is if you were growing out juveniles, but at 6" or so they'd very likely have to be separated.

that's an awesome story! I'd love to see that in person. I'm sure dovii do make great wet-pets and I'd love to have one, but they just get so darn big.

By the way, ACIDRAIN, it's great to see you posting again. It has been a while...glad you're back.

Hey Jason, Long Time No See! Yes I agree they will probably get too large, My biggest point to make, is these are considered to be THE "wet pet". My friend actually has a trick he plays with his. They play ball. One day he was playing ball with his dogs, and the ball bounced up and into the top of the tank. His male rushed over and "popped" the ball back out of the tank towards him. He had noticed the fish watching the ball playing with the dogs, and was amazed at the response when it landed in the tank. The pair actaully looked like they were just waiting for more. So he lightly tossed the ball back into the tank, and "pop" they knocked it back out towards him. Now when he has visitors to his house, he does this little "show" for them. He says they love to play, except when they are sitting on a spawn. They they will just look at the ball floating there, and not mess with it.

an 80 gallon would be a bit small for a 2' to 2.5' fish. a female dovii might do ok but a male would definitely get too large. i'd go for a motaguense, loisellei or friedrichsthalli instead. they are the dovii's smaller cousins.

The "true" wet pet, is the wolf cichlid, or dovii. This fish is extremely smart, very aggressive, and a singular fish would do OK in that tank. A pair would till they got to large. I would suggest though, a larger tank for this fish. But solitary it would probably be OK in that tank. My buddy that breeds them has his in a 125 gal, and they do fine.

Any ideas appreciated.
Only SA/CA cichlids, but no dwarves, angels or discus.

lol, there wont be much chance of them being close to each other, lol, most big aggressive cichlids try to kill each other after the fry hav been raised. its usually the female that cops a beating so you will hav to have another tank to accomidate her. this is more relative to the devil and midas rather then the JD as JDs are only mildly aggressive.

If I went Midas or RD, would it havta be alone no matter what? Like no pairs?
Cause If I went JDs, I could get a pair...
But I'm assuming that a pair will be closer to each other than to me.

Definately get a Midas or Red Devil if you want the 'wet pet' type of fish.
