This afternoon I noticed my two largest angels doing something strange. I got five of them them about 4 months ago when they were about 1.5" long, two of them have grown really fast and by now are about 3" long. Anyway, this afternoon I noticed that one was in a strange "leaning" position, with the head facing about 45 degrees downward and the body also slightly tilted, its fins totally spread out. Meanwhile the other was repeatedly "kissing" the same spot at aboth the base of the dorsal fin, it seemed very gentle and the other didn't seem to mind. It ended when one of the other angels came close by and was chased off by the kisser, who then also chased of the bowing Angel. Has anyone seen this kind of behavior before, or does anyone know what it means? I'm curious if it is paring behavior or something.

I've never seen anything like that.

Are they doing any of the normal Angel mating behavior?

Have they been chasing each other around sometimes locking jaws and wrestling for a bit? Have they staked out a territory and driven others away? Have they been cleaning a leaf or rock or place on the tank? Are their papillea showing?

Good luck, Mike

In small tanks, some breeders have reported angels competing with one another to lay eggs, hence nipping at others' papalia. I have, however, seen your tank, and it is nowhere near overstocked and the nipping behaviour is usually attributed with extreme aggression and preformed fairly violently. hm....

Since that one time I haven't seen them doing anything like that again. Neither is any of the stuff going on that you just described.

This really seemd very gentle and not aimed at hurting the other, and it wasn't anywhere near the papalia, just that one spot at the base of the dorsal fin (on the back). My best guess so far is that the angels are only adolescents and don't really know what they're doing just yet. I have some hopes that they might pair up though, which would be great, it's been nearly 15 years since I last had angel fry
