My firemouth has been a particular bastard of late. After moving my tank into my new apartment, the firemouth decided to take over the driftwood cave that my 4 clown loaches used to inhabit. Now he terrorizes anyone who comes nearby without fail.

I want to know 1) how this will affect the loaches' stress level and 2) if/how I can tame the firemouth's aggression. The head fish expert at my LFS told me isolating the firemouth into my 15g for a week or so would only make it meaner...

Thoughts?

Another thing...

I don't know what to make of the situation because the clowns keep going back to the cave only to get chased out again. Are they playing with the firemouth or do they really want their spot back?

As bad as it sounds, I wouldn't be quite as mad if the firemouth actually flared its gills but he just charges... a true bastard.

I would take all of the fish out of the tank and then rearrange the cave work and etc.. Then put the clown loaches in for 20-30 minutes and then put in the firemouth. This will give the loaches time to stake out a territory for themselves and then the firemouth should bother them anymore.

I do not think that would work since the clowns have already lost the territory once i thinnk the firemouth will just take it back when he is introduced. Other than that i really dont know how to help you. Sorry.

I'm only speaking from experience. My Green Terror was being a pain towards my school of clowns, so I was just assuming if it worked for a gt it should work with a firemouth.

the best thing you can do is the tank rearranging that was already mentioned, but also add at least 2 or 3 more caves. you want several hiding places for the fish to be able to choose from especially for the loaches.

Buy the loaches another peice of wood or 3, and try to make defined territors using plants or whatever.
