I recently got a keyhole cichlid from my LFS about 2 days ago. When I first put him in the tank he darted down to the bottom corner of the tank and hid behind the plants. At first I thought he was in shock but now I really think hes just frightened. Whenever I walk in the room, he leaves his spot in the front of the tank and retreats behind the plants. He seems to be hungery but is too afraid to come to the top and get the food. Should I get him another keyhole cichlid for a tankmate? should I get sinking food? any help would be appreciated

It would help out your keyhole a lot if you got another one. My keyholes were a little scared for about a day, but then got better. Mine eat sinking food (they love shrimp pellets) and recently they have realized that I feed flakes, so they eat those too.

What size is the tank and what are the other inhabitants? Keyholes are very shy and peaceful, an aggressive fish might scare them.

What colors is he showing? Is his "keyhole" mark black?

Currently there are no other inhabitants in the tank. hes in a 29 gallon tank with some gravel and a few live plants. He just looks really frightened, and hes a little shakey. So if I got him another keyhole do you think hed feel more comftorable. Im just worried because his fright is causing him not to eat.

Either get another keyhole or two, or get some dithers...he needs proof that it's safe to be out and about in the tank. All alone, he's not sure someone won't jump out and eat him.
