I am from Southeastern Ohio, where there are only 3 or 4 places to buy fish within a 40 mile radius. Anyways, while on vacation in Flordia, I stopped at a Wal-Mart in North Carolina. I found 2 bettas (1 bright yellow, 1 blue with yellowish-orange fins with a blue outline) that I couldn't resist to buy. They are absolutely stunning. They survived the trip back to Ohio and are doing okay now. The Wal-Marts in my area always seem to have bettas, but I have only seen red and blue ones. I felt like I hit the jackpot.

Our store in Fargo/Moorhead ND-MN has a huge assortment or all fish. Lots of cichlids - firemouth, jewels ect.....but what is sad is that in the little 10 gallon tank of Oscars there is usually anywhere for 15-20 Oscars.......and they are not small (relatively) they are about 2-2 1/2 inches long.....it is sad both look like they are on there last breath. I usually end up buying my fish there however trying to save a few...sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't....

keep in mind, those workers aren't just keeping fish, they have the rest of the pet department to worry about too

Their pet department is peanuts compared to the size pet department of, say, an actual pet store! I work in the specialty (fish, reptiles, small animals, and birds) department of the local chain petstore, and we have 128 tanks, way more than any Walmart I've ever seen, and if they aren't kept spotless bad things happen! I don't think it's too hard to do maintenance on the two dozen or so tanks they have at Walmart.

Anyways. The Walmart near me actually has been much better, but I attribute that to the fact that the staff came in to ask US how to cure various problems their fish were arriving with.

Some of the people there are quite knowledgeable, and they regularly carry african cichlids, angels, bettas, etcetera. Unfortunately I've also seen them label blue gouramis as "dwarf gouramis" and other such things, I feel sorry for the person who buys it not knowing!

I would love to see them try their hand at saltwater; if the pet department manager KNOWS anything it could be great for competitive pricing!

By the way, this is me NOT slandering, I love Walmart dearly. I just rarely buy their fish.

There is liability involved when talking about businesses, if the names of businesses are used. Publicly posting derogatory comments such as " Walmart fish are always sick and nasty" or something to that effect can be acted upon by walmart in court as slander, etc. There are many cases of businesses suing people on forums, along with the forum itself for slander, claiming it's hurting their business, and if your claims can't be backed up with facts then you know what happens then. It's not necessarily the fact that people can be found guilty, and forums be found guilty of slander and ordered to pay the business, but the fact that even if found not guilty of it, the court costs and lawyer costs are VERY real.

For that reason " LFS" and " Major Department Store" are best used in place of specific store names. Nobody gets sued for positive comments, that is why you can be specific in store names when praising them. That is called "free advertising" in their eyes, not slander that could potentially harm their business.

I see paypal donation buttons all the time for legal defense funds for people that got caught up in stuff like this on websites and forums.

" I received dead plants from xxxxxx .com " - factual statement

" xxxxxx.com always sends out dead plants." - slander

It is easier for a forum to not allow specific store name use when making deragatory comments then it is to sift through it and decide what can be proved and what cannot be proved, and if a business sees their name and deragatory comments, even if it can be proved as factual, if they take it to court you and the forum are still out the money for a lawyer. Something to think about.

I'm not speaking for FishProfiles, I am just a member here...so correct me if I'm wrong, mods.

Our Wal Mart (Superstore in Sidney, Ohio) has stocked Angelfish infrequently.... Male and female bettas appear to be regular stock as they've been offering those for quite some time.... Recently they've been stocking albino frogs.... As with most chainstores, the quality of fish, maintenance of tanks and even variety of fish are soley contingent upon the Dept Manager and Associates.... You can definitely tell when a real "fish keeper" is working in the dept and when they're not....
To be honest, since another lfs, Jack's Aquarium, opened earlier this year I haven't bought any fish from Wal Mart... but I still buy some of my supplies and tank decor there.....

To thine own self be true...

Its not like they can just put a NO SALE sign on a tank because all of the tanks are connected to one sump so if one fish is sick, they all will be soon, i dont know about other stores but that is how it is here.

Please remember that on FP we do not post about companies in a negative light. These posts will be edited.

Funny how it can be positive but not negitive. What's the line for neg.?

Saltwater wouldn't last around me. They don't have the proper maintainance.

Well i have some news for you all. Last night i was at walmart and to my amazement guess what fish they had? Angelfish. I asked the employee there about it. He said that they are going to start to expand the type of stock they get in. Now, these angels were a little pricey at $6.70 but when i looked closer it was not a bad buy. The angelfishes body were about the size of a quarter with nice markings and nice fineage. I would probably still never buy fish there though. Also, the employee told me that by christmas, they will be adding on two more tank systems. 1 for more freshwater and 1 for saltwater. Thats right , SALTWATER. Has anyone had angels at their local walmart lately too?

Ok, about Walmart... my dad is the manager of the #4 best store in the company, which has thousands of stores, so I know quite a bit. They cannot help it if the fish come from the buyer sick. They should put a NO SALE sign on that tank and maybe treat it a little. They should also be able to keep the tanks pretty clean...keep in mind, those workers aren't just keeping fish, they have the rest of the pet department to worry about too. I agree that they could do a little better job, but when you think about it, they are the only major retailer that even keeps fish.

Anywho, our Walmart has a pretty good stock of fish from cories, to angels, to upside down catfish. They even got in some clown loaches once. I think I might have heard of a store that had SW fish, I believe SW was a big failure because the fish are harder to keep alive and expensive to lose.

One of the wal-marts here has pretty nice fish, they just havent gotten to angels yet. I went there the other day and I looked at the oscars and they had camallanus!!! One of them died while i was there, he had a paintbrush of camallanus. I told the employee(she knows me really well) about the oscars and she got pissed about the company sending them sick fish like that.

We have angels at our walmart And I picked up a gorgeous female and male betta last week (I swore I wouldn't do such a thing, but they *just* got the shipment in ) Ours also has quiet a variety of potted aquarium plants - which is nice - and everything looks really healthy

Guess our Wally World is doing pretty good eh?
