Well Openwater that sounds like you've READ alot about these fish. I'm not really in the habit of spiting out other peoples opinions on fish i try to go with personal experience along with a bit of fact....

I've had my 75g, for over 2 yrs now and guess whats in it...

Eye bitters 1m, 3f
Yellows 2m, 5f
Blk. Acei 2m, 4f

Not a single problem They've even all breed

All your info is very accurate. However, eye bitters are very peaceful, as well as very low on the territorial scale in the home aquarium.

And yes their diets differ, but if you pay attention and use a bit of fishtelligences you can find a suitable diet for haps and Mbuna in the same tank.

"Personnally I'd never keep eye bitters in a 75g."
See i thought the point of help others in threads was to help them set up an aquarium thats to their liking as well as acceptable for the fish in it.

And as far as them eating Pseudotropheus in the wild, they'll eat ANY MBUNA JUV in the wild but do you really think you can compare wild fish in the lake to ones in aquariums????? Nope. true they are the same fish by name and coloring but thats about it...

If all you've got is factual info your half way there, but without the personal experience to back it up your back at the beginning.
Here's a rule I like to use if your only going to copy info from one site to this one, do it in your head.
Anyways, i'm done with this.

Songbird, you do what you wish, you'll be fine.
Just try to keep all the new fish bigger then your eye bitters mouth and give them as much rock work, etc. as you can provide.
Good Luck and enjoy

I'm going to say get, 3-4 more yellows and the same for the eye bitter

Ahh. That is far, far way too over stocked suggestion.

Those eyer biter or Dimidiochromis compressiceps can get 11 inches. Personally I would never keep them in a 75 gal.
Beside their size they also prey on Pseudotropheus species in the wild.

Pseudotropheus is a good mix, Acei, Socolofi, Saulosi

Mbunas and haps are not good mixes due to the different diets of groups and the fact that some haps prey on mbunas

I would either go with mbunas. Keep the yellow and get rid of the hap(eye biter)

Or

Keep the yellow and mix in some peacocks and some SMALLER haps. I would personally return the eyebiter cause they belong in a deep tank of at lest 24 inches and it should be at least six foot.

There are a lot more african than just malawians. Some of Lake Victoria and the surround basin as some of the most spectular cichlids there are.

First off i agree those giants need to go...

Second, in a 75g with a yellow and an eye bitter.... There's LOTS that you can add... but they need to be fish from LAKE MALAWI.

I'm going to say get, 3-4 more yellows and the same for the eye bitter.
Then get 2 more species, 5-6 of each.
Pseudotropheus is a good mix, Acei, Socolofi, Saulosi, there's also lots of Elongatus varieties to choose from....thats only a few of my Fav's though, do some research, pick 5 species come back and let us know.......

Try to end at about 20 fish total, and be sure any new fish are big enough to avoid the mouth of your current eye bitter.

try here:

Go to profiles, then Lk. Malawi, try the Mbuna.

Good Luck

The gaint danio are fine in the tank. I have seen others uses the gaint with cichlid of all types. The only problem is that they add to the bioload and most would rather have a another nice cichlid in the place of the danio. But if the danio are your thing leave them in. They should however be in groups as they are a school/shoaler.

How many danio do u have in now?
