it has the mouth shape of a electric yellow but it is missing the stripes. i have heard that some e. yellows show up now and then without the black markings. this could be what you have. the mouth definitly does not look like a psuedotropheus or maylandia.

Here's another pic of a female saulosi, that looks almost identical to the female msobo:

I'm showing this because I'd still think it's more likely that your fish are saulosi. Especially as, in your second pic, your fish looks quite yellow. But if you look closely you will see some differences in body shape, particularly mouth shape - note how the msobo's mouth is a little bit elongated, protruding slightly. Also, you will see that the saulosi has some very very faint barring on it's body. Do your fish have any evidence of barring, or are they a very solid colour?

Actually to me the msobo also looks very much like a red zebra, on the slightly less red side. In fact, I wouldn't completely discount your fish being red zebras, especially since you mentioned blue on the fins - male red zebras often get a blue tinge to their extremeties.

Just to confuse you more - a male red zebra:

It can be a real trial, identifying mbuna! :%)

Malawi freak, I believe those photos are of adults, except maybe the last one. So that's what they'll look like, unless 1 or more of them end up being males.

Male msobo magunga:

Male saulosi:

I agree with Mr Cichlid, most likely you have saulosi. Msobo are pretty rare I think, so it's unlikely that you'd have them without knowing what they are.

Macbeth - you know, come to think of it, at that size it really is quite likely that you have electric yellows that just haven't got their black yet. They are some tiny fish there!

Hi JB,
I've got 5 E. yellows without any black markings, about 2-3cm in size.
I hope they're E. yellows! Only go them a week ago!
First foray into cichlids and they were sold as E. yellows.
Taking a closer look though the E. yellows (he hopes), are more flat on the underside than the fish in your photos and the face is slightly different - longer. Well more so than the two top photos.

Different strokes for different folks, for me theirs way to many outstanding malawi's...
but if i had to try:
Mbuna, Ps. Acei *Tanzanian black
no, no wait......
Peacock, Aul. Steveni *Kande Island
I can't do it

Also, I'm thinking the little yellow one is a Pseudotropheus Saulosi (female), about 99.7% on that oneAlso strongly looks like a Johani but the thickness in the body is for sure Pseudotropheus

Beautiful Moori, enjoy

Sorry to not explain myself clearly, Just Beginning, I was looking at the yellow fish in background of Malawi freak's photo, not the blue ones.

So was I! Female johannii and saulosi are yellow. I just didn't think it looked like e. yellow as I have never seen one without the black stripes.

I really don't think it's a peacock, it has the body shape of an mbuna. The blue tail you mention is puzzling. I'd definitely say female johannii or saulosi otherwise.

Female johanii:

Female saulosi:

Female msobo:

It could possibly be a male of one of these species starting to change into his mature male colours, but usually this happens all over the body at once, not just the tail.

I definitely don't think it's an e. yellow. I'd say female johannii or saulosi, maybe, or possibly a red zebra. It's hard to tell with juvis.

Malawi freak,
That fish looks just like the Electric Yelows I bought a few days ago, on my screen the colouring is so similar. Of the 8 I have, 5 don't have the black dorsal markings and I selected them because of the chance they may be female.

I'll be a bit p***ed off if they turn out to be something other than Electric Yellows though, so the more knowledgeable people throw in your ideas.
