Am back in the aquarium game after 8 years I have bought a new 100 liter tank and am still deliberating on what to put in. Used to keep general tropicals in a community tank, but think I have moved on
I would like to have a pair of gouramis and maybe 4-6 tetras. But now this whole cichlid issue is confusing me.
What beautiful fish
Can I keep a Sheepshead Acara or maybe a Blue Acara with other fish? Or Malawi? I have done some reading and see that the guys don't generally like plants ( whick I love ) and that they can be aggresive.
Some advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I dunno about the Sheephead Acara , but i know that acaras are pretty aggresive, but you may come across a nice one. But in terms of plant friendly cichlids i would go with either, Discus, Rams, Kribs, Angels, and you can sometimes get others that usually like to root up plants but sometimes they dont, like firemouths, green terrors etcc..

For that sized tank you could maybe have one angel. A blue acara would get too large, golden or flag acaras are smaller. German or Bolivian rams are another option, as well as apistos.

These 'cookie cutter' links might give you some ideas as well:

Theresa lists some good fish...

I'm pretty sure a sheepshead acara is the same thing as a flag cichlid (Laetacara curviceps).

I would go with some dwarf cichlids. Blue rams are appealing to me they have lots of color they wont tear apart plants and they stay small.

Yeah I would go for a pair of Blue or Bolivian Rams and add about 6-7 Cardinals.

PJ, won't the cichlid chow the cardinals? I love the little buggers, but was unsure if they would be suitable with a cichlid.

rams don't get very large and are not overly aggresive. they are still cichlids though so there will be some aggresion but provide them with a nice cave and don't crowd the tank and all shall be well.

one thing you do not want to add is anything from lake malawi. i love them but they will wreak havoc on everything you put in the tank and you can say good buy to your plants. mine love plants, for dinner.

Right. Sheepshead Acara=Flag Cichlid ( Cheers Eric )
Put in a pair with 6-8 Cardinals ( Cheers PJ )
Make sure of atleast 1 good cave, and watch the plants.
Can I feed them regular all-purpose flakes, or should I go for a specialised one? I am planning on giving the little guys some live food aswell...
Thanks:88)
