We got some of these babies in at work this week. That's pretty cool, considering that the vast majority of rams found in the hobby today come out of fish farms.
The rams are dully-colored, though they are still young. I've seen photos of wild rams, I know how well they color up as they age. Nice little fish, they are. The problem with our rams is that they caught a fungus, and aren't looking so hot right now. Still, they're hardier than the fish-farmed ones, which is evident in the fact that none of the wild rams have died yet.

Our owner (who sucks at ordering fish- he ordered some dyed blood parrots) said that we will never order them again. He "doesn't like them", because they caught a fungus and because they aren't super colorful. For the time being though, these rams are a steal at $1.88.

So, just thought I'd share. Anybody else seen wild-caught rams for sale?

They are sometimes available in the UK. I've seen them only once. A guy I know breeds them with German rams and apparently, they don't quite colour up like the Germans do even when they're grown. I should get a few of his rams in about a month and I'm very curious to see how they look like. I have some cacatuoides he bred and they're much nicer than the ones you see in shops. So nice, in fact, that for quite a long time I was sure that one of the females was actually a male as she's actually colourful and has some ray extensions on the dorsal and caudal.

Unfortunately, we don't. I can't figure out why, since the fish dept. is pretty big. Management hasn't been impressing me, and it seems like they've been getting worse lately. The place could be much better; hopefully things will improve in the near future.

I found pictures of some nice wild rams in one of my books, so I'll upload them tomorrow. I wish that the Asian-bred ones looked like this.

about the fungus brooks. wild rams are know to carry all kinds of things like gill flukes and other nasties. they should be QTed and medicated for such things regardless of their arriving condition. even if they look and act perfect chances are they have SOMEthing. even store boughts carry such things because they carry so well not exactly sure why. this could be the primary cause of the fungus outbreak.

my 75g tank had run perfect for a long long time till i added some rams. then i had a outbreak of columnaris within a week of adding them. and i can garantee 2 more fish didnt cause a severe imbalance to the bioload. they had to have somethign with them that passed onto the other fish.
