which one do you prefer to keep?

1)Wild Caught
2)F1's (the offspring of a wildcaught pair)
3)Tank Raised
4)Don't care, and havn't really given it much thought as long as the fish is healthy

i put this thread here because i'm asking this question pertaining more specifically to cichlids (africans mostly, but any cichlid will work)
this is just something i'm doing to help me decide on my next purchase (Flametail Peacocks)

I dont really care as long as the fish is bred well. I would prefer F1's over wildcaughts as the quality is as good as wild caughts, but they are easier to keep if they have been raised in captivity.

I prefer wild caughts, preferrably raised in someone elses tank for a few months to get rid of parasites. I breed alot of my fish and prefer to have as much genetic diversity as possible. That way i can work with strains and then breed them back to wild caughts to keep them strong.

none of the above.

i would rather have 3rd or 4th generation from wild caughts so you get the best of both worlds. you know they havent been overbred and they are also hardy like a tank raised. of course this isnt often a choice because you either see wild caught or farmed to death lol.

F1 is offspring of 2 F0(WC) fish, not known parents. If two random kribs have babies, they're not considered F1 fish. Tank raised can also be F1,F2,etc... If I am planning on breeding the fish (cichlids), I want F1 or F0 fish of high quality. For just random fish (cories, rasboras, tetras, etc), I'll just go to a good LFS that carries good stock.

Also, if an F1 breeds w/ an F0, it's still an F2 fish, technically.

F1, definitely. Not dangerously sensitive (not that I don't think I'm capable to keep Wilds, because I do and have, but being able to make small mistakes), easier to breed, known to be close to what the fish is meant to be. Tank-raised is fine for lots of fish but with most of my Tangs I want to be a lot closer to the lake.

I would say tank raised since lately there have been problems with the lakes that cichlids inhabit, so it would probably be better not to diminish the wild population.

personally I prefer F1's. same quality as F0 (wild caught) but not as sensitive. often, F0 pairs require the same, or at least close to the same water parameters as where they came from to spawn. F1's often times are more adaptable and will spawn in a much wider range of water parameters.

I'm right there along side the other F1 voters.
Not the exact genentic diversity of the F0's but a good comprimise.

I personally really don't like getting store stock as they usually get there fish from the same main suppliers, often meaning all the fish are very closely related.
The further you go the greater the chances that any of your fry produced will be deformed or lacking in the traits that make African cichlids so outstanding.

Might not matter to some but for breeding purposes, F0 if you up for the little extra work, F1's at the very least

I don't really give it much thought, though most of my fish are F0s.
