A fully grown Angel will eat Neons, but if it isn't fully grown, the Neons might make it.

My dime sized angel managed to kill 5 neon tetras in about two hours...
Neons in my experience have never surrvived in an angel tank =\

Not even small ones
mind you those neons were already full grown and she still managed!

Really, the question is more of your kissing gourami. This is a fish that can easily reach 12 inches, and really needs more space than a 46 gallon tank has to offer. A very large fish as such, in a small space, is likely to become aggressive and attack smaller or similar fish.
I believe in your case the Angel would be better off with your tetras than a Kisser....no doubt a kisser could eat a fish substantially larger than that an angel could ingest.
They also live a very long time...my Uncle has a breeding pair of pink kissers that are 23 years old and each one is 15 inches.
I think you would be better off to remove the kisser, and then add a smaller angel. I think your fish would all be safe, except for the neons.

Chances are, the dwarf and pearl gouramies may be ok with an angel, but the kisser is apt to become angel aggressive with growth and maturity. The rosy barbs will sometimes nip an angel's fins. I would not recommend adding angels to your current setup.

Thanks for the information. I have not gotten the Angelfish yet I wanted to research them first. I really like them and wanted to see if they would work in my tank. Is there any other fish that would be considered dinner to the Angelfish. Right now I have a 46 gallon tank with a few tetras, 1 dwarf gourami, 1 kissing gourami, 1 pearl gourami, 2 red tail sharks and 1 algae eater, rosy barbs, and the scissortail. Will I be pushing it if I got the Angelfish? Sirbooks yes you are correct I do not have a swordtail I have a scissortail

This is actually a very delicate question. Many people disagree on the subject of whether captive angelfish will eat small tetras, and just about everyone has an opinion. I certainly do, and here it is: I believe that if you add the small tetras first, let them grow out a bit, then get a small (one inch) angelfish, it will not eat the tetras once it grows up. The reasoning is that the angel will be so used to the tetras, it will not consider them as food. From what I've heard, this is usually the case when allowing an angelfish to grow up with tetras. Things may work out differently for you, but I kind of doubt it.

I assume that your "swordtail" is actually the livebearer, and not the difficult-to-find swordtail characin. The livebearer swords are not tetras.

Thanks for the information. The bloodfins and Lampeyes are in a school but the others are not. Maybe the Angelfish will get along with everyone in the tank and hopefully the tetras will not become dinner.

I think there's really one answer to this:

Full (or almost full) grown angels will eat smaller tetras, like neons or cards.

All of you tetras should be in a group of 6 or more, as they're schooling fish. That one loner neon could easily get eaten up by a medium sized angel.

I don't think they need to be moved, as long as there is "safety in numbers" and you get tiny angels.

Sometimes if small angels are started out with large neons, they consider them part of the furniture and ignore them. However, if more same size neons (or cardinals) are added, the new ones are sometimes picked off and eaten - probably because they subtlely act differently than the established population. In all, cardinals and black neons are better bets with angels than regular neon tetras as they are a tad larger.

So I guess the tetras will have to be moved to another tank.

It depends on how big your angelfish is too. An inch-long tetra will do ok with 3-inch angelfish. However, a full grown angel will eat them.

What kind of tetras do you have? Most of them are safe with angelfish, though they will nip at the angels' fins every now and then. The only tetras that *may* be eaten by angelfish are the smallest ones, such as neons and cardinals. Could you describe what tetras you have, how many there are, and what size they are?
