i recently got a used 55usg gallon that came with some semi-aggressive fish. along with them came a auratus cichlid, who chases everbody. he is full size and is very bold. would it be okay to put him in a different tank with a texas and jack d that are the same size?

the jd & t are not too aggresive but they will soon over size the african.

the auratus would smash those two. that fish pound for pound is one of the baddest out there. i have no problem with mixing africans and americans like sum... but that fish will pic on anything its own size a little bigger than it or anything smaller than it. wait a while till the americans are big enough to hold their own

When I first set my cichlid tank up I had a male auratus in with other Lake Malawi cichlids. He bullied and killed most of them. So I moved into a 30 gallon by himself except for 1 pleco (that he actually leaves alone). He's been in there now for about 5 years and seems to be happy.

I would return him to an LFS, it sounds like you don't have a tank set-up suitable for him. They shouldn't be kept with Americans as their diets, water requirements and aggression are very different. They are really best kept in a large (at least 55 gallon) species set-up, in a large colony with only 1 male and many females.
