I have a 55 usg tank thats cycling right now and I was going to do a south american cichlid tank, in addition to this, I was thinking about some angels. Any suggestions on Angel variations/ tank mates for them in a 55g? any advice is welcomed thanks!

Well, angels are a good choice, being south american cichlids themselves. They will do well with other peaceful fish, just don't put them in with nippy fish, or small tetras, as angelfish are e to eating them.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Angels are middle of the tank fish. I'd get something for the bottom, Loaches, Cories, Jack Dempsies (though Jacks can be cranky) or Rams. Then something that likes the top like Gouramis, or Betas.

Have fun, Mike

How many angels are you going for? I'd get a gold or green severum, and it'll be a very nice show piece along with a pair or trio of angels.

"I'd get something for the bottom, Loaches, Cories, Jack Dempsies"

Jack Dempseys are actually categorized as aggressive, and they will probably kill angels and eat cories. They arent atually bottom dwelling either. Cories and loaches would be a great choice without the jack dempsey though.

I'd think that the angels would be the centerpiece, considering how gorgeous they are and how big they get. Were you only going to have angels and cories? If so, I'd say 4 angels. I've had a bad experience with only having 3, since one got picked on. Remember, cories should be put in schools of at least 6. My 55 gallon tank is pretty much a SA bio-type. I have angels, cories, rams, rummynose tetras, b/n plecos, and apistos.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

I guess I should have said or Jack Dempsies, a Jack would eat the loaches too if they were small enough. My Jack doesn't bother anything unless it comes into his territory and he hangs at the bottom in the rockwork much of the time. I've had angels in with him but they were larger than he could make a meal of and he never went after them. In fact they could enter his territory where the Sevrum couldn't so I think a Jack would work especially if it started out small with the angels.

If you want a South American Cichlid Tank, I'd go with a (as in one because pairs will create havoc in a community if they breed) Gold Sevrum, a Firemouth, a Jack Dempsy and 4 Angels. The Angels may get cranky if they pair and spawn but the other fish mentioned can take care of themselves.

Get them all as juveniles (I might get larger Angels) and watch them, cichlids are individuals and some are crankier than others.

I've had a Jack, a Sevrum and Angels in a 55 with no problem. Right now I have Firemouths and Angels together with no problem, though the Firemouths are only about 2.5 inches and the Angels are about that in body size without fins.

If you get a Sevrum, get a gold. They're kind of so so when they're small but they are way cool once they get big.

Good luck, Mike

That looks all right, though be warned: When any of those fish pair off and start to breed, you might have a bit of temper, though not as much as with other cichlids. I like cories more than the bn, but that is just personal taste.

allright so basically they might get aggressive when breeding? I think I can handle that, I have another tank to move any of them too if thing get out of hand, and youd suggest a school of cories over a BN? so like 6-8 cories, 4 angels, 2 rams?

Get a pair of Angels & a pair of Rams for your 55gal. tank. With them you can add 2 BN & a couple of lovely Corydoras.
