The only really reliable way to tell them apart is to wait until they spawn. The female's papillea is blunt and round on the end, the male's is pointed. That said, if you watch a tank of angels sometimes you can make a pretty good guess. In my experience (I have tree pairs right now and have had one other) the male do have a hump on their head and the females, if they have one at all, is smaller. If raised under similar conditions, same food, same tank, the males are also larger.

I you think you have a male and want a female go to your LFS and watch a tank of large angels. If there is one fish several others are trying to get next to that MIGHT be a female. If the ones trying to get next to her have humps on their heads and try to drive each other off even better. If she is a little bit fatter in the belly better yet. I managed to pick out a male like this once but it is by no means 100% reliable. I'd give it about 75% if the angels are breeding size.

My angels started breeding when they got about the size of the bottom of a coffee cup.

Good luck, Mike

i would say the best way to get a pair is 2 get 6 young ones scientist have proved that 95% of the time youll get at least one pair.

I don't see how scientists could be that accurate on something so highly variable as this.

Sexing
In females, the ventral--]anal fin distance is greater. I've had trouble with this method, though, as it's often hard to tell what classifies as "longer". Another way would be to cut out a small circular piece of carboard, and place it directly behind the fish. Sine a bright light from the opposite end of the tank, and take a took at the region just above it's genetalia. Females have an oval structure, while males have a pear shaped structure.

Getting six will get you about 96% chance of getting a male and a female, then it's up to the fish to pair up. Heck, with 4 you still get a good chance, and if you know about the sexual dimporphism you're about as likely to get a pair as you would wiht 6. Science isn't the right word, it's simply a math formula - after all, each fish has a 50% chance of being male or female!
