i am going to be getting a new tank soon and am wondering what to put in it. it is going to be about 75-100 gallons and i think i may want some larger cichlids. what are some good american fish that i can put in the tank. i don't want a whole lot but i would like to keep a couple. i have been reading and looking at fish and there are a couple that intrest me.

oscar, seem like a lot of fun, but heard they can be messy.

convict, cool that it can hold it's own, but no breeding

jd, i like it but it may be too aggresive

firemouth, looks nice but just seems strange, how hard would it be to get one with bright coloring

that's all i really know, any suggestions would be of great help.

There are many SA and CA cichlids to choose from, here is a retail site, that has many very nice pics. Just click on the photo link at the top of the page;

If you don't mind having just 1 fish than you can't go wrong with a Midas or Red Devil. I have a 14 inch Midas in my 90 and he's probably the coolest fish I've ever owned. Awesome personality and fun to watch. Mine's a male so he also has a really nice hump on his forehead. It's all about personal preference though. It's hard to go wrong with any South American cichlid.

What size do you consider to be a bigger fish? Oscars may be messy but a few dithers and a good cleanup crew take care of it. Although you should really have another filter for them, water should be cycled about 10-15x per hour with them. Severums get along well, mixing gold and green would be good contrast. Festivums may be a good choice. The real problem with size is the tank. If its a 75 should only have 8" fish ... 90-100g you can go with a few of the larger ones.

I would also suggest since it will be a new tank going with as much filtration as possible ... preferably adjustable. That way you can turn it down if you decide to do plants ... or turn it up to help with some of the messier cichlids.

Are you wanting to stay CA/SA? If not then you have alot more choices in the africans as far as larger with colors.

not really sure what i want to do. I am just trying to get ideas for my new tank and i keep changing my mind but I don't care because I get to learn about tons of different fish in the process.

speaking on tanks, i would like to get a 100g tank but i know I am getting atleast a 75g. Money is always an issue, and so is space.

Any suggestios on fish you like will be appreciated. thak you.

i have a fire mouth, it is a rather peacful fish and it can go from the dullest colors to the brightest depending on it mood. i watched i duel with a convict and dempsey for about 2 hours. that was cool, i have never seen such bright red on the firemouth. awesome
