Anyone have these guys or have had them? what are your experiences on these for community fish, with other SA cichlids?

I have very limited experience with this species as I've only kept a couple of juveniles. I've seen some people claim they are not overly aggressive while most others say they are very aggressive. they are often times referred to as a mini-trimac and for those familiar with the trimac (one of the parent species of the flowerhorn) know that the trimac can be a rather aggressive species.

I certainly wouldn't consider them to be "community-safe" though in large tanks you might be able to keep them with other cichlids of similar size/temperament. imo, a pair would do nicely in a 40 long or 55.

I have a juvenile pair that's breeding and I would say they can be overly aggressive if kept in a small tank.

They are definitely more territorial than the other cichlids I keep them with (2 Convicts, and 2 Jewels)

With salvinis, the only thing to remember is that introduce smaller ones with bigger cichlids and make sure they have really good hiding space.

Mine dont get along with the Jewels at all, but luckily, the convicts have taken over the central territory and the male convict is much larger than the salvinis so there is peace in the tank (I mean, the best peace that can be kept with 3 breeding pairs in the same tank)

The salvini's are about 4 inches.

I have pictures from my old tank of one Salvini, that I suspect is the female. I dont have lights in this new tank, so I didnt take any pictures.

You can look at my webshots folder at:

http://community.webshots.com/user/clownygirl

for pictures of my female Salvini from the old tank.

BTW, forgot to ask, what are the tankmates that you are thinking of?

Well they would be going in with 2 demon earth eaters, as for now 3 baby blue acaras, which are the same size as the salvinii's at the LFS, and soem tetras

definitely a bad idea. for one thing salvini are much more aggressive than the fish you already have. another thing, if I remember right these fish are in a 55 gallon which is already going to be overstocked once your fish put on some size. adding salvini to the mix will only make things much worse.
