well he knows now and hes said hes gona leave them in there till they die. i wouldnt have jumped him if i thought it was a mistake...which is was in the start. but hes been told and has decided to let them die in the tiny tank. well thats open season for a rant in my book. obviously logic doesnt work.

Convicts can be smaller (5" or so) depending on where they're from (stunted, inbred fish - some wild populations are allegedly smaller), but I tried two convincts in a 20 long and while no one died, and they did pair up, they could have used more space.

Convicts get too large for a twenty gallon tank. They grow to six or seven inches, and put out cichlid amounts of waste. Some folks insist that convicts can fit in smaller tanks, but I really have a hard time believing that.

ok, everyone calm down. . Sin, I understand where you're coming from but let's not jump all over people that came here for help. You could have said everything you wanted to and still have gotten your point across while at the same time being respectful and helpful. And Ali, you have to understand that we all love our fish and take them very seriously. We do the best we can to give our fish the best possible care so some of us might be upset by someone who buys the wrong fish and plans to buy new ones when the others die.

Now, all that having been said here's what I'd do if I were you. You said,

i bought the dempseys on accident, they told me the dempseys would live in a 20 gallon but no other fish can live with it... and i told him if he was sure and he sed "ur asking a fish specialist if he is sure on fish" and i said ok...3rd of all.. you cant bring live fishes back to the pet store because one time i tried that and they told me i wasnt supposed to do that because u stress the fishes like that..

First, I would find about 5 different sites that have profiles of the Jack Dempsey and print out the profile. Then I'd highlight on each one where it says the max. size is usually 8-10". Then, I'd bag the 2 dempseys up and take them and the printed profiles to the lfs where you purchased them. Once there I'd ask for the manager and explain that one of his "specialists" sold you these 2 Jack Dempseys with the understanding that they will be fine for life in a 20 gallon tank. If the manager tries to say that the dempseys will be fine then this is when you'd get out those profiles you printed. Show him each and every one and point out where it says how large they grow. Tell him you'd like to return the fish for credit that you'll use to buy fish that are appropriate for your tank. If they try to tell you that you've stressed the fish by bringing them back to the store, then explain that 20 min. of stress for the little dempseys is far better than living a very shortened and cramped life in a tank that's much too small for them and that if you'd been given proper advise from their "specialist" in the first place the fish wouldn't have had to be stressed at all. Be sure to remain calm and don't sound condescending but at the same time make sure they know that you don't appreciate the poor advice and that you're continued business with their establishment will be based on how they handle this situation.

That's what I'd do anyway.

Not a good beginning to your first time on FP.....

geeze

Thanks for at least trying to figure out what you can do, I would double check all your pet stores one of them may take live fish back.

If not try your local paper, or on fish sites like these someone may be intrested.

1st your 15 then your 17. and age doesnt dismiss you from responsability you piad for. bring the JDs back to the store. very cruel deaths leaving them in a tiny tank waiting for them to die. how would you like to be in a closet with a litter box while someone watched you die. if your gona own fish then you need to learn they are creatures not stuffed animals that feel nothing.

All of those are fairly common.

Bolivian rams and german tetra rams are seen almost at every LFS. They can have some beautiful colors.

Multis and brevis are a little bit rarer, they are special shelldweller cichlids from Lake Tang and require some special care.

Keyholes, kribs, apistos, etc. are all fairly common too. I know we carry all of them at the LFS where I work.

Call around and see who carries what. I guarantee you'll be able to find the rams if that's what you're most interested in.

And yes, marine biologists study fish as well, that was the best course I ever took. Taking oceanography next year.
