we have a pair of cockatoo cichlids in our 75g community tank. The one we think is a male has started spending alot of time in a small bogwood cave, seeing off things that come near. He ventures out now and again and seems to be looking for other caves in the pebbles and under filter. could this poss be breeding behaviour??
is there anything we should do to help, or to look out for.

thanks

It could be, or he may just have started to establish his home base. When did you add it to the tank? If it hasn't been long, then I'd guess on the territory. If you notice him courting the female and the female spending time near his cave, then you're probably seeing some spawning behavior.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Then the behavior you described isn't normal for him? Look out for the fish pestering or courting the female then, you'll notice a major change in behavior (and it'll really color up) when it wants to spawn.

If you aren't sure that your cockatoo is a male, would you post up a pic for i.d.? That way you can be sure about its sex.

hi. no it isnt normal for him. the 2 normally just swim round the tank together. he is now spending most of his time in the bogwood cave or at the back of the tank under the filter. the female is just loitering around at the front of the tank.
we think hes the male as he has a dark bottom half, whereas the other one is all yellow and brighter. the male has more res on his fins. this is the best pic i can get, sorry. its prob not clear enough, but hes not pic friendly at the moment.

Looks like a male to me.

well the male now practically lives within the cobbles. there seems to be a natural cave in their. we couldnt find him until mark went to cut a dead leaf of a plant. he shot out from between the cobbles. now he seems to spend alot of time there, occasionally going to the driftwood cave. wondering if he is guarding something??
