I've got a 300 gallon SA tank with severums, eartheaters, clown loaches, leporinus, a bushfish and a big pleco. The fish are very peaceful, even by severum standards. The tank has lots of rock arches and caves of various sizes. The loaches like to play in some of the lower caves while the severums like to snooze in the larger openings on top. What I'm looking for is a smallish, colorful fish that will hang out in or near the lower to mid-level caves. Any ideas?

how small were you looking for? blue acaras stay around 6" and would stay near the bottom. also, several gymnogeophagus species would probably work and they are very colorful. G. rhabdotus, G. balzanii and G. sp. 'Bahia Red' come to mind.

another choice would be the chocolate cichlid. this is a very colorful cichlid though it will grow more in the neighborhood of 10-12".

I'm looking for something in the 1-2 inch range. Small enough for the little caves, but big enough to not be considered food by my bushfish. I've got 2 pair of gymnogeophagus: G. labiatus and sp. red head. They are great, but not much for the caves. They tend to hang out with my loaches.
My lfs has some juvi blue acara. I was real tempted, but eventually they would get bigger than I want. They also suggested rams or dwarf cichlids. They look cool, but have no experience with them.

Rams and Apistos are both soft water low Ph Cichlids but I kept them in 7.6Ph and they did fine. The Rams even spawned for me so unless you're way out there on Ph or hardness either should be okay. Apistogramma Cacatuoides and Agasizzi were the two types of dwarfs I kept and they are both cool fish and they love caves.

Good luck, Mike

anything in that range would be eaten, a blue acara would be a very good suggestion. i would stay away from dwarve as there is the chance that the severum could beat them down
