I'm thinking about setting up a 10g multi colony. are there any fish that could be compatible and occupy the upper levels such as gouramis?

or should i just stick with a species tank?

I would stick with a species tank & don't add any other fish.

I agree; a 10 is just too small to ask the multis to cohabit with another species.

But no matter - they'll (all too soon!) fill the tank and you'll be wondering how you could ever have thought more fish were necessary, because these are a thousand times as entertaining as any tank you've ever owned before.

what do you think is the best substrate for a multi tank..? maybe something dark so they contrast better.

Also, what should I start out with? should I try to get 1 male and 2 females.

and whats the best way to sex them? The only way ive found so far is size.

sand! just not white sand, i find the fish get washed out colours and are skitish if they substrate is too bright.

never tried black sand (dont get it here ]:|>: ) but i guess i'll be ok. my friend put black gravel with her oscars and after a month they were turning black and losing their orange!

a trio would be great to start off with. size is the easiest way to sex em (if the fish are the same age) but if you get a chance to sit and watch them i notice the females are more clingy to their shells, and dont really venture too far from them if they sense danger and the males like to keep the females in his territory/close to her shell. but thats not a very practical way to sex em esp at a LFS! its just my observation!
