i am planning on getting a pair of convicts, but i want to breed and pink to a black, will it work.

yes, it will work. The fry will be a calico color...good luck, not that you will need it they breed very easily.

They are still the same species so it should work.

It's just like breeding a Gold and Green Severum...it's only a color morph...not a totally different species.

chances are they won't be calico. when you breed pink to black you'll get about 70% black and 30% pink fry. eventually after enough line breeding you may wind up seeing some calico fry but there's no telling for sure. if you definitely want to be getting calico fry it's best to have at least one parent be calico.
