will a convict pair (male and female) defend there territory together and the male is always flaring his gills like a siamese fighting fish is that good or bad

they will defend their territory together in if they are comfortable in the tank and have something to defend the territory against. in too small a tank though, they should be kept alone and would only have you to defend their territory from. this may sound a bit farfetched, but stick your finger in the tank when they are guarding their free-swimming fry.

as for the gill flaring, this is perfectly normal. I might start to be concerned if he was flaring at the female a lot, but then again they'll also do this when they're doing their breeding dance. chances are he's trying to let someone know to stay out of his territory.
