i went to my lfs looking for crickets, but i looked and saw a pair of breeding convicts with young in the convict tank. anyway, i got the pair, and as many babies as he could find, and i was kinda confused,
and for 6.00 for a proven young pair, i could pass it up.
this pair is only about 1.2 inches long, isn't this alittle small to breed? and also i doubt the fry will make it, so i think i am waiting for the next young. how long does it take for them to breed again?

I've had them breed at about .6 inches, its quite interesting seeing these fish breed at such young ages.

Usually they can breed every month, while some people say they get more frequent spawnings.

I have heard that Cons with breed when they are quite small. The smalles mine have done it is around an inch or two. As for how often, my mature pair spawns about every two weeks. The male is about 5.5 inches and the female is about 2.5 inches. Most of the time I don't end up with fry because of my pleco but it happens sometimes.

trust me bettachris there is no need to worry, convicts breed like rabbits and are good parents too. it may take a bit of practice (and the dad may try to eat some) but you'll have fry comming out of your ears in no time! if you want to shorten the time between spawns, separate the fry.

n.w way, good news, after the move the parents are still protecting the fry taht are left. she is a very nice mom, very protective, the dad however, is kibnda a slacker, he really isn;t protecting the fry, and kinda sits there while the mom works.

I see this in my Blue Rams as well. The mother seems to take on most of the responsibility. Occasionaly the male will come and guard the eggs/fry while the female wanders about...this only lasts for about 30 seconds to a minute and then the female goes back to guarding for up to 5-10 minutes. It seems the male defends the territory and the female tends the eggs. If this is happening for your fish, I'm not sure, but to me it sounds like the same idea.

I have also read that Bolivian Rams do this. It's probably just a cichlid thing.

Good luck with the fry.

new question on convicts, i am guessing that 1 male and 2 large females wont work. or 2 pairs sharing the same tank wont either right?

i have found a slightly larger pair of pink convicts, and i was wonder if i can divide the tank and if it will work that way.

You might be able to get away with two pairs in the same tank but I would be afraid the males might fight or tank space. A lot of the issues could be solved depending on how thick your rock/DW work is. If they don't look at each other all the time it might not be too bad. Two females in that size tank with a male probably wont cause too many problems depending on how much area the male wants to take over has his. When these fish bread they can become really nasty and it changes a lot fish to fish.
