What size tank is it? Breeding convicts (and there's rarely any other kind ) can be a danger to other fish even in a fairly good-sized tank; I wouldn't add anything in a tank smaller than 4'. For one thing, fish big enough to protect themselves from Cons probably need 4' anyway!

you could put firemouths, jack dempseys....you could actually put a lot of cichlids with them just depends on how big your tank is....but ^^^ he's right....if you have a male and female together most likely there going to breed and convicts are very nasty when breeding and don't let them fool you by there size...when breeding they will take on just about anything

How big of a tank are you looking at doing this in?

Right now I am running a 55g with a pair of convics. It sounded like you wanted to stay in the cichlid family so I don't have much experince with that but I do have a number of fish living wiht my convics.

1 Pleco
4 giant danios
2 rainbows
1 orange fin loach
1 synodonus catfish (miss spelled)
1 rainbow shark (he was mean to my tiger barbs in my 20g so I thought he might like to hang with a tougher crowed)

I never have any major problems in the tank. Ever once in a while the male convic puches the loach and cat around but nothing is crazy like.

My convict is aggressive. He's always chasing the Red Terror or Red Devil. My Jack Dempsey will take him down when he gets annoying. If they have a place to hide like mine do you should be fine. I put my convict in a day after everyone else thinking he would be the whimpy one. Boy was I wrong. I should have known when he busted the bag and got out on his own. One thing about him is I wish he could eat feeders. The Convicts mouths are very small. My fish has to hit it hard then slowly dismantle.

that won't last long, I can promise you that. especially if you're talking about a true red terror...cichlasoma festae. just out of curiosity, how big a tank you got these guys in?
