is this wrong, 2 times in the last week, i went to the lfs and looked for breeding pairs with fry/eggs. and i got a black pair with fry, and a white pair with eggs on the tank. so i asked to get the eggs and the fry, but the lfs workers only got a few, but i felt bad yesterday when i picked a pair with eggs, and i took the pair and the rest ate the eggs.

also i am not sure if i got a pair? the lady got the female, but the male ran away in a tank with alot of other convicts. so i waited for a fish to come back to the nest site and protect the eggs, and then there was a male (i think) and i told the lady and she chased him around, my main concern was that he must of mixed with the other males, and i am not sure if i got the right male. but i waited and no males came back to the nest when the other convicts ate the eggs, chances are that i got the right ffish right?

also do males have alittle orange on them, b/c the one i think is male has alittle orange. and the female i tihnk has like the egg tube exposed. so i am guessing they bred today.

also is their a way to sex them by the dorsal fin. like with kribensis.

Males have longer dorsal fins, and if old enough have a nuchal hump on their forehead. The females are the ones with the orange on their bellies. Breeding them is fun, but be prepared to have lots of fry. Make sure that if they have any tankmates that the tankmates are tough. What size is your tank?

the orange on the sides is the best way to sex them. convict males will not have any orange on their sides at all. if you by chance have a male that has orange on it then it is a hybrid. also, fin length is not an accurate way to sex them, I believe it simply is a recessive trait. there are long finned convicts and short finned ones. I've had both males and females that have had both short fins and fins with long extensions.
