In my experience for sheer personality I would say Convict. If you are going to add a male and female tho be prepared for some serious offspring. A convict will nearly rival an oscar for sheer personality however if you get some fry in the tank he will not only greet you at the front of the tank, he will attempt to attack you! It's actually quite funny watching the male convict flaring and shaking himself in an attempt to drive you away from the tank. Be warned tho, if you do decide to go male and female, don't add anything else to this tank as a 46 gal will not be enough room to satisfy the territorial demands of a brooding pair. My first pair of convicts was in a 125 gal tank and after spawning they owned 100 gals of it much to the dismay of my green terror pair 3 times their size.

I think I would go with the lab's because their disposition is a little less aggressive. Though not as active as the convicts you could really have more than just a pair which would help to fill the tank, and they are not nearly as prolific.

A negative is that they have no problem in consuming their off spring, however if you are not interested in raising a lot of fry this shouldn't be a problem.
