my son has a female and a male convict in a 30 gallon...both approx the same size....well the female is slightly bigger. Anyway, he is looking forward to seeing the breeding behavior and the parenting that these fish are famous for....but so far, all that is happening is the female is chasing the poor male around every time she happens to lay eyes on him. Luckily there are plenty of hiding places in the tank. So my question////is this normal?....or do they hate each other and i should try for another pairing situation?

in my experience, it's better if the male is slightly larger. females grow considerably slower than males, so your son's female being slightly larger than the male means the female is also a lot older. the pairing may not work out as very well. I'd return the female and get 2 or 3 females that are smaller than the male. you should see a pair in no time.

I have the same problem, and I have been told to be patient, so I am busy twiddling thumbs

How long has the guy been in, and how large are all 3 convicts?

I actually took Jason's advice and took the slightly smaller male back to the fish store and got a larger male. Now the male is slightly larger than the female, and all seems right. No more chssing going on.
Thanks for the advice, Jason!

If worst comes to worst, try getting a divider for the tank. Whenever my cons get into an 'arguement' I put up a divider and reintroduce the a few weeks later.

Another thing I have noticed is that if your convicts are very small . . . sometimes they are very hard to tell what the gender is. Young females may not have their red scales show, yet . . . so what you might have had could have been another female that just wasn't showing a red belly, yet. And two females could fight plenty. =P
