No, in the wild they eat algae and auwfuchs on the rocks. In aquariums a good pellet like NLS or some spirulina algae flakes are good. They may eat the fry of other mbuna but nothing very large.

I think they mostly eat vegetable based foods.

Why would you want to feed them feeders?

Ghost shrimp would be very bad for yellow labs. Even though they're mostly omnivorious too much protein will cause them to catch bloat.

actually, Electric Yellow Labs CAN handle high protein diets compared to most other Mbuna.

in the wild, they feed primarily on aquatic insects, snails, shrimp, and occasionally scrap algae off of rocks.

if i were to suggest a live food for Electric Yellow Labs, i'd HIGHLY recommend you stay away from feeder fish... not only do they contain no nutritional value, but are VERY disease ridden and can infect the Electric Yellows with the same diseases the feeder fish has.

my advice is to go for frozen shrimp and worms...not live fish.

Compared to other mbuna they can handle more protein but you still need to be careful with them. I would say not to feed them frozen food no more than once a week and that may be a little much. The best food you can give them would still be NLS pellets.

I had housed a 3" male lab that ate comets 1 time a week(due to feeding my Bichirs). No problems in the 9 months they were housed together. Just use some NLS or spirulina flake for most the other 6 days to "flush" their system. Ive never lost a cichlid to bloat, and most my cichlids are or were housed with my Bichirs(live 1 time a week).

I have fed my yellow labs brine shrimp a couple times per week for the past 14 months or so that I've had them, and they are happy and healthy. Their diet does mainly consist of spirulina algae flakes, however.
