A very nice dwarf cichlid, usually suitable for the community tank. They are closely related to L. curviceps, which is more common in some areas, but have the additional red color, especially nice if breeding. They are often shy and peaceful, although breeding will make them more territorial (the website below shows you can get one that may have more aggressiveness than normal, but I think this is more the exception than the rule). They are most likely to breed if you have soft, slightly acidic water, and include flat surfaces (such as slate) for them to lay their eggs on. Keep an eye on nitrates, especially with fry. They may spawn in a community tank, but for the most success, it's best to separate them. Provide plants and other hiding spaces for them. I'd say a minimum of 15 gallons for a pair, but preferably 20g plus if you can.
