Do you mean uniform spots or sort of blotches? Black colouring in the body is a sign of poor breeding in electric yellows. The purer the yellow colour is, the better the specimen.

I dont necessarily agree with Just. The blotches are quite common on f1 and f2, they reduce the number of splotches by line/selective breeding them. Personal opinion is that the more genetics in the fish the better the breeding. Alot of the adults with blotches are culled, thats why most people think that they should be pure yellow.

the spots and stripes are quite common on wild specimens.
The reason why most captive bred electric yellows are all yellow is because they're bred to be that colour.
Most electric yellow breeders just throw away the yellows which show black spots and stripes and only breed with the all yellow ones.

Several months ago I bought 8 Electric Yellows that all appeared to be from the same batch, their colour was a very distinctive full deep yellow.
Over time the males developed their distinctive black markings on their dorsal fins and spots on the anal fins, one male has also developed black markings on his body, like dirty smudge marks.
My break down m/f is 3 m and 5 f.
I'm loath to get rid of any of them but I think natural selection will dictate that the 'smudged' one won't get to breed; he's not the dominate male by a long shot.
Why did you ask the question?

i have seen fish with black markings eg baring but i have seen aboslutely none with black blotches and i have seen ALOT of photos and done ALOT of readinf on theses acording to ad konings the only marks the electric yellows should have and this include wild caughts are a black mask on the face of males which my male vaguely shows. I am under the impresion that the black baring etc is from to much inbreeding but im not positive this will be an interesting discussion, it would be good to come to the bottom of this

i had 1 electric yellow for a while - 'walmart special' so who knows where it came from. it was a bright yellow colour, but had faint black 'streaks' running vertically along it's body - is this what you're fish has?

I don't think you have an electric yellow then. They never have tiger stripes or full spots.

Thanks for the info about the wild electric yellows, good to know .

i have seen some really bad strains of yellow lab that has black vertical stripes and black blotches all over them. my male is a decent one, but he still has a black splotch on his head, just before his dorsal fin. he also has a black "beard" that will come and go with his mood. i have heard that all of these markings are normal, even in the wild. the really nice, pure yellow with striking black on dorsal, anal and pelvic fins are line bred and hard to get.

its just a bad strain. again, good ones are very hard to come by. even buying wild ones will not guarantee super quality.
