The other day I asked my dad about the french restaurants in the area so I could inquire about getting escargot shells for a shelldweller tank. But he said that the escargot is always really tiny, and the shells wouldnt be big at all. Now I'm confused, b/c I thought that the escargot shells would be big, big enough for Multis. Now I'm not so sure...any ideas??

Escargot IME is good sized; the most common shells, both the type I've bought and the type I've been served with, are about 1.5-2" in diameter, which is just fine. The ones I bought were called "extra large" but they were the only type available, and from two different suppliers, so I think that's the standard size. Just make sure they're more than 1" diameter to start, you can always find larger ones later.

Thanks for the quick response Molly. I'm going to call a couple places to make sure they have actually have the shells in the restaurant, as opposed to the people getting them served with their dinner or something. I'm assuming they need to be cleaned before use, how do you go about doing that?

I soak them in a mild bleach solution. And usually follow up with a toothbrush scrub and warm water if needed. Lots of rinsing if you use bleach
