why wont my firemouths breed? they are in a 4'x1'x1.5' (38gal) tank with 19 black neon tetras, a convict, plec, 3 clown loach, pictus, hoplo and a rainbow shark. they are always together and have there own little territory, the female is also fat and has been for a few months.

they are about 3" and just wont lay eggs.

Overstocking is probably the main problem here. Your tank is saturated with fish, to the point where your firemouths are unwilling to breed. Plus, your convict, pleco (if it is a common pleco), and clown loaches will all eventually get too big for that tank. Removing several of these fish, and especially the ones with the potential to get large, will make your firemouths feel much more secure. Once you move some fish, the pair should start to spawn.

to be honest i think you're quite lucky that the friemouths aren't breeidng, because if they were then they would be very threatened, and hence very very aggressive, in a tank that full.
I'd agree with sirbooks that a little less crowding would help them feel secure enough to breed, but it would also mean that if they breed they'll do less damage.
