I have a friend that has a 20 gallon high tank and insists on putting a firemouth in it. I know that firemouths are on the smaller side for cichlids, but I told my friend that his tank was too small and it might stunt the growth of his fish and it wouldn't be happy. He disagrees and thinks that his tank is plenty big enough. Is he right, or am I?

They largest Firemouth ever was a little more than 6". A singular firemouth will do okay, providing the chemistry of the water is good and it is kept clean.

I wouldn't put a solo firemouth in anything smaller than a 29 gallon. A 3' tank would be better.

They largest Firemouth ever was a little more than 6".

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but have you ever seen anyone keep firemouths in 100+ gallon tanks? If the tank is large enough they can get pretty big. Same is true with most, if not all CA/SA cichlids. Most people think 12-14" is pushing it for max size of a midas, but I recently saw pics of a 16-17" male midas. I have a fm in my 150 and I'm curious to see how large it will be in a few years.

The smallest tank i would keep a Firemouth in would have to be 29 gallons. It will need the space, otherwise it will be stunted in the 20 gallon high.
