Firemouth cichlids aren't as aggressive as many of their Central American neighbors, but they still tend to be more pushy than angelfish. A territorial firemouth could easily make short work of an angel, especially if the angel was a peacefully-inclined one. Another problem is water parameters, specifically pH and hardness. Angelfish like their water on the soft and acidic side, whereas firemouths prefer harder, more alkaline water. They can both stand wide pH and gH ranges, but they are both better off in a certain range, and these species do not have overlapping ranges. In short, it really isn't a good idea to put these fish together. They certainly *can* be kept in the same tank, but it isn't recommended. They are just different enough where it counts. |

No way would I put any other cichlid in with the angels. Although the RTS and angels would do ok I think. If you get angels, I suggest more than 3. They tend to get agressive on the weaker one. Also the firemouth would be ok. They are seriously aggressive in my experience but don't think they'd mess with the shark. None of my cichlids ever got agressive with bottom feeders (sharks, loaches, plecos, corys). I have a green & gold sev that just had babes in with a shark & pleco. They beat the tar out of the festivum in there of the same size though! She's ok...in another tank. OTOH My friends africans killed each other & the pleco~! ![]() |

Too chancy with a firemouth. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |
