i have a 20g long. could i put a pair of firemouths in there. with some zebra danios as something to chase

Should be fine. They are good together and will help fires breed too if they are secure that there are no threats as in the wild.

firemouths will most likely eventually need a larger tank. I'd look for a 40 breeder or 40 long in a couple years for them. there are some similar Thorichthys species that don't get as large if you can find them...T. aureum comes to mind. Also, instead of danios, I'd get some platys as they are naturally found in the same waters as firemouths and other Thorichthys. The main difference is that the fm's or whatever species you get would be able to feed on the platy fry, which constitutes a large percentage of their diet in the wild.
