well I have this 40 gallon (36X18x16) that figured i'd use for an african community tank. I'm planning on putting rocks along the back wall (lots of caves) and keeping it pretty sparsly planted (large amazon soward maybe some micosoward or hornwort) and i got some crazy gravel, echo complete african cichlid substrate,1/4in with some shell fragmants thrown in..(couldn't find any sand).

now on to my question...what fish?

feel free to help away

I'm also new to Africans can't wait till i actually have my tank setup.

I don't really think Kenyi are a good choice for a 40g. They get very aggresive and aren't generally recommended for beginners.

for a 40g.
I think
2-3 Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos
3-4 Labidochromis caeruleus/Electric Yellows &
1 BN would be a good setup.

Good luck with you tank

if your only a new b to africans.

then a few electric yellows' and blues are great
you could also add a few "silhosy" spelling error.

i have seen these fish live happily together with pleco's and whiptails.

electric yellows and Acei are the perfect beginner setup. now dont sit there and grumble that you want much better then what a beginer wants. these 2 fish compliment each other and are made for each other. experts put them together because they go so well together. this is why it makes a good beginner setup. they arnt any easier its just preplanned to perfection. you dont have to ask " will these go together or will they kill each other?"

many reasons why they work great. Acei are ALL over the tank swimming, they school, neither are agressive to each other only to themselves. Purple fish with yellow tails artisticly go perfectly with yellow fish. the Acei are very active so they bring out the shy yellows. the yellow figure if they are out in the open and not being eaten its safe out
