There are so many different things!
With the beefheart.. do you just chop it into small pieces and feed it.. do you have to cook it or anything?

Ask your LFS about silversides. They are about 2-3" slender silver fish. They aren't for human consumption, so they usually are found at the LFS's fridge .

Had no idea of any of those problems, acei... I guess it's a good thing that I haven't been feeding much for freezedried bloodworms with all of the other good food I've got

Thanks for the tip

Really good thread.

How big are the silversides when you feed them. Do you cut them up or toss them in whole. The ones available to me look to big even for the full grown peacocks or even some of my haps.

i dont know if you are aware or not, but beefheart is very bad for your african cichlids. at cichlid-forum.com there is a lengthy article about how warm-blooded meat is not good for africans because they lack an enzyme to process it and it will cause fatal liver problems. they simply cannot metabolize the fats in it properly.
as for brineshrimp: i would avoid only because it is seriously lacking in any nutritional value. it maybe good for the fry, but adults will not benefit from it whatsoever.
as for bloodworms: there have been reports of problems with some cichlids getting the freeze-dried worms(mosquito larvae) stuck in their throats because the worms have small, hair-like hooks covering their bodies that snag and are very hard to dislodge. frozen worms may be different.
from all i have read and researched, the best for omnivorous and carnivorous cichlids is krill, silversides, plankton, small krill. all preferably frozen. i personally use diced krill and have very good results. i have had no ill effects. i also like the ocean nutrition frozen spirulina cubes. for flakes i go with osi spirulina. totally killer quality food. if youor fish dont eat it, there is something wrong with them. new life spectrum pellets are, in my opinion, the hands down best staple diet. fresh blanched spinach is great too.

Feed it raw... there's a few ways to do it-
-Cut it into small pieces and feed them to the fish
-Blend it up and put it in a ziplock bag, sqash it down so it's flat, put it in the freezer, and let it freeze for a few days. Cut or break off what you want to feed to the fish, and put the rest back in the freezer. This method works good if you want to target medication to one specific fish, but not the whole tank-dump some of the medication into the food while you're blending it up-be sure to feed it directly to that single fish

I usually feed my cichlids frozen brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms, freezedried krill, freezedried plankton, hikari's cichlid pellets, omega one shrimp pellets, beefheart, and frozen cocktail shrimp (jumbo)...

Some tips on feeding cocktail shrimp - Defrost them in a cup of tank water, pull off the tail thing... cut 'em up into 15-20 pieces (depending on how big the shrimp and the fish are...just small enough so that the fish can swallow them in one bite... I usually cut them in half from head to tail, and then in strips from there)... feed 'em to the fish a few pieces at a time with tongs (or dumping them in works too, I guess). Remove whatever they don't eat after a few hours

I'm planning on picking up some frozen mysis and maybe a few others when I get more money

Give them something meaty. For example brine shrimp*, plankton*, blood worms*, and any other little meaty treat you can find at you lfs.*

*can be freeze dried or live (but freeze dried is easier)

hope thgis helps!
