I would just use coral substrate. Seeing that Malawi cichlids need a pretty high PH level.

I use a #20 filter/abrasive sand. It's not as fine as sand at the beach, it's more like a fine pebble/stone mixure; It's color is like a natural lake bed and shows off the colors of the fish nicely. My Mbuna have great fun digging around in it. To keep the PH high I have a lot of limestone in the tank (70G).

Black sand will make their colors intensify, but crushed coral will provide better water.

My favorite tank set up I have ever had was malawis with black gravel, and I used limestone for the many structures in the water to help keep the water hard.

the black gravel really enhances the amazing colors of the cichlids.

think it depends on the color fish your getting. darker colors will show up better with a light substrate like white. the brighters colors explode against black sand.i have both in my tank, dark purple, blue, and yellow so what i did was put in black sand to show off the yellows then got a bulb that targetted the purple and blues. worked out very well.

I have plain black gravel in my Malawi tank. I don't need any PH buffers because the PH straight out of my tap is so high. I really like the way that it makes the colors of my fish stand out.

darker substrates definitely show the colors better. i use lighter ones, but my next tank will have a darker sand for sure.

Which species are you asking about. The Lake Malawi fish are a sub family of the family of cichlids. Species are each individual type of fish.

Most of the Rift Lake cichlids will look better on darker substrate. As this will allow the fish to color up darker to try to blend into its environment. With white and brighter colors, the fish will color up more lightly to try to blend in.

HTH....
