As for suitable companions, in a 55 you are somewhat limited as these are large fish. However, with that said, a Blue Acara would be a good addition, 1 thing to be careful of tho, Acara and GT can spawn together as they are the same genera. Another good addition might be a Severum, or Firemouth. Personally I have Jacks in with my GT's with no problems, but then I am running 125's. If you want a truly enjoyable experience go with a pair of GT's and spawn them. GT's are typical Cichlid's in that they are wonderful parents and herd the fry around like sheep. As for maintanence fish I prefer white tip sharks, only 2 tho in a 55. Pleco's would be alright but the mess they make outweighs any advantages they may give you. So, to sum it up, personally, I would go with a pair of GT's and a pair of white tipped sharks. Like I said tho, thats just my pref. |

One drawback to wts is that they are a brackish to full salt fish when mature. This means that once your cat reaches roughly 8 inches its time to get yourself a new one. Latin name is hexanematichthys seemanni. Another worthwile consideration for your tanksa without ugf would be my personal favorite Auchenoglanis Occidentalis, the giraffe cat. These guys are the fish equivalent of a vacuum cleaner. They are nocturnal and typically will only come out in a dark tank. These guys are geophagus to the extreme in that they will thouroughly rearange your tank substrate on a nightly basis. As such these are only good in non planted tanks. Substrate should be at least 2" with 3" being even better. Sand or fine gravel is best for these guys, making it easier and safer for them to filter your substrate. The drawback to these guys, as mentioned already, unplanted tank, and they get quite large, around 12-14 inches. Advantages, they are extremely peacefull, thouroughly clean gravel to the point where a gravel vac is pointless, and will not be bothered by gt's or even oscars. It all depends on whether you are planting the tank or not, and whether or not you are willing to exchange your cats once their needs outgrow your tank. Hope this helps. Posts: 2332 Kudos: 799 Registered: 18-Jan-2005 ![]() ![]() | What about say a pictus cat or a Synodontis cat. I have a Synodontis eupterus with my pair of convicts and he holds his own. Mine grew pretty fast and they only get to be about 6 inches so you don't have to worry too much with the 55 gal and giant fish. I also want a GT really bad. They just look like super cool fish. I think I am going to have to wait and beef up my tank size before I get on. I want at least a 75 before I add on with my convicts. Even though they are not a heavy breading pair my 55 gal would get quite small with all the other fish I have in it. Good luck!! 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |

The females have an orange belly while the males don't. Just make sure you don't set up a pair. If you do two males I have heard people have problems with that but if you get them when they are young you may be alright. 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |

The Males will get bigger and you will now have a breading problem. I have seen some really nice albino cons. I don't know about the aggression difference with the though...... 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |
