I don't think the sailfin Pleco would work because they have a maximum length of about 20". Also, don't put in a fish that is half or less of the size of the Pike cichlid because they are highly predatory and will attempt to eat it.

We really need to species of the pike to help you furthermore.

A chocolate cichlid would work, as well as the jack dempsey you suggested, armored bichirs, other pikes, gymogeophagus balzani, geophagus surinamensis, larger cichlids that wont be prey.

A chocalate cichlid would get to big, the jack dempsey would most likely too agressive in such a small tank, gymno balzanis are a cool watered fish that need 60F for 3 months, and geo surinams get too big. If your pike is an average lfs pike its most likely a compressiceps or belly crawler. A blue acara or green sev would be nice along with maybe a BN and a raphael catfish.

There's not really an "average" among species - it's one thing or it isn't (or it's a hybrid, but thankfully I haven't heard of any hybrid pikes). Why don't you look through the profiles on Cichlid-forum.com and see if you can spot yours? Pikes vary significantly in adult size so it's really impossible to talk about anything long-term for yours without knowing the species.

Do you mean C. strigatta? That's a quite rare species, I believe. Perhaps it's compressicep or vittata, instead? Or regani?

This is why it's important to know exactly what you're buying; you could have a fish that will only reach 4-6" ... or you could have one that will hit 18". Quite a difference, there.

It's probably sveni, Venezuela, belly crawler, or some other commonplace fish often slapped on with generalized names such as "striped pike". Unfortunately for you, like, 90 percent of all crenicichla species regularly imported are striped in some way. C. regani is uncommon at best, though once well established in the pike community. We do still get them in, but MUCH less frequently. However, the "strigata" from the cichlid forum page is actually a venezuela sp.; a readily availible--not to mention, HUGE--predator.

What color is it? Any distinctive markings? Size?

Red eyes?
Any lateral banding?
Any fin markings?
If you ask me, it sounds like you've got yourself a sax.
