Hi there

Just a quick question
how can you tell when angels are pairing up for mating??
I have two angels and im quite sure they are both of the opposite sex. lately they have been displaying very odd behaviour confronting eachother and "twitching" vigorously at eachother. Then they grab eachother by the mouths!!!!!

Are they scraping or "getting it on" >

Any help please

When preparing to spawn, angelfish clean some kind of smooth surface first. It will usually be a large leaf (maybe from an Amazon sword), or a flat rock. I don't know about the 'kissing', though I've heard that it may be part of mating behavior.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

The grabbing each other's mouths is either a fight over territory or more likely, it's just a little spat because one wants to and the other isn't ready. They'll either get over it or on with it.

Good luck, Mike

Cheers for the help guys!!

well the latest news is that these fiesty fish are breeding! I found a patch of eggs in one corner of my tank on an ornament ( near to the filter!! )

Now im in a bit of a pickle as i`ve no experience with this.

what should i do now?? should i remove the angels and eggs and put them in another tank or should i section the tank with some gauze or something to keep the other fish away??

or should i do nothing and let nature do it`s stuff??
ARRHHH so many questions!!!

cheers

I'd leave them be and see what happens this time. They'll spawn again in 10 days or so if the eggs get eaten.

If you want to breed Angels you need to get set up before and give them their own tank. Then when they spawn you can see if they will rase the brood. If they don't you can decide whether or not you want to hatch and raise them yourself.

For now I'd put a sponge over the filter intake because they might raise them in the tank they are in.

I'd also watch close because breeding Angels can get cranky, I had one pair kill a Ram.

Good luck, Mike

well the eggs are gone!!!
Im quite gutted about it, was getting a bit excited about having a few nippers flying around.

but on the plus side my female angel has moved over to the opposite side of the tank - well panted area, guarding it like its a case of national security and is franyically hoovering some large jarva fern leaves that are in there.
so hopefully they might spawn again!!

Yeah, sometimes it takes angelfish a few spawns to figure out what to do with their eggs. Since one of your angels is cleaning off a java fern leaf, I'd say that they are getting ready to spawn again. Good luck!

Look closely Smoothdog. Are there little wigglers in the leaves of that plant. The parents will often move them after they hatch. They can be hard to see so look carefully. They are basically just eggs with tails.

Hope they're there, Mike
