I have noticed that the male multis are bigger and get a nuchal hump (lump on their forehead).
It also seems that the females will stay around their shell while the males will swim in open water, only ducking into a shell when alarmed.

The females territory is her shell. The males territory is the surrounding area around the shell. And yes, as stated above, they will hold their own.
