It's best to either keep two pairs, or multiple males (around 3-4) with one female if your trying to breed them.

Keeping two pairs allows to pairs to try to compete against each other, but a tank with multiple males and one female allows a pair with other males to ensure a strong bond between the pair.

Its near impossible to sex them other than venting/breeding - so odds are if you have two fish you can have breeding.

I'd stick with a 4-5 fish.
