Bolivian rams are pretty tough to sex, especially compared to German rams. Males are often brighter and larger than the females, and have 'threads' on their dorsal fin. Females do not have these, and ususally have a pinker belly than do males. I hope that helps you.

They are small, thin extensions of the fins. They are visible in this picture of a male Bolivian ram.

If you have the space, the easiest thing to do is to buy a group of 4-6 of them, and they'll sort it out for themselves. Once they pair up, you can redistribute (move, trade, etc.) them and leave a pair in your tank, if you desire to breed them. You'll most likely have success with few or no other fish in the tank (when the lights go out, caviar is a popular midnight snack!).

I agree they're hard to sex when young, but adults (2ish inches) are easy to sex as Sirbooks says - they have long flowing extensions on the tail fin.

Oh, they're much prettier at home than at the LFS , too, where they are usually stressed.
